*Nigeria Universities Entrance, Doors May Be Under Key And Lock From Thursday – Reason*
The Non-Academic Staff Union of University (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have set every machineries on motion to shut down doors to offices in Nigerian public Universities once again, right from Thursday, July 4th, as they are planning to embark on an indefinite strike at the instance of expiration of a two-week strike notice given to government, over 4 months withheld salaries, and the unpaid 13 months salaries to Abia State University workers.
According to SSANU President, Muhammad Ibrahim, who made it known to the public at a briefing in Abuja that apart from the withheld and unpaid salaries, most institutions still owe between three and six months of the N35,000 wage award even as it accused the Federal government of being slow and dodgy with regards to announcing a new national minimum wage.
The other issues that bothered on the Union affairs are the limited number of educated individuals in the reconstituted Boards of Federal tertiary institutions and the proliferation of State Universities, amidst poor funding of existing ones.
It was gathered that the unions are equally demanding a quick fix to the nation’s security challenges, following the killing of a Deputy Vice Chancellor, of the Uthman Dan Fodio University in Sokoto.
It should be recalled that Academic Lecturers, under the umbrella of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, had planned to down tools over allegations of neglect by the federal government.
