Newskingdom reports that two traditional rulers have been relieved of their duties by the Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, as no specific reasons were provided for the decision.
In a statement signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Gill Nsa, which announced the suspension of His Highness Okkon Archinong Eke, the village head of Esuk Utan, and the entire Esuk Utan Village Council.
The suspension took effect on January 3, 2025, directed the Calabar Municipal Traditional Rulers Council (CMTRC) to investigate allegations leveled against the suspended village head and council. The CMTRC has been given one week to submit its findings.
The removal stemmed from a dispute over the appointment of a Paramount Ruler for the region.
However, the Obutong Clan Council has been instructed to form a five-member committee to oversee the Esuk Utan community’s affairs during the investigation.This decision follows a similar move in April 2024, when Governor Otu removed HRH Etinyin Archibong Ita, acting head of Akansoko in Akpabuyo Local Government Area.
Etinyin Archibong Ita had argued that the governor’s appointment process bypassed traditional protocols, which require…..clan heads to collectively select a Paramount Ruler. Despite his objections, Governor Otu appointed HRH Etinyin Francis Effiom Edem Efa as the Paramount Ruler for Akpabuyo, leading to further tensions.
While details regarding the current suspensions remain unclear, Governor Otu’s actions signal a continued effort to address concerns within the state’s traditional leadership structure. The public awaits the outcome of the CMTRC’s investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the latest dismissals.
