Some law-abiding members of the Enugu community have assisted the State Police Command in arresting a man identified as Sunday Echege for allegedly cutting off the wrist of his wife Chinonso Echege.
According to reports, Echege committed the crime due to his suspicion that the wife is cheating on him.
Reports also revealed that the machete used in committing the crime was recovered from the suspect.
While confirming the incident in a Press Release, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe said the suspect confessed to the crime saying he acted on suspicion.
The statement reads in part:“The Enugu State Police Command, through its operatives attached to Okpuje Division, on January 26, 2025, arrested one Sunday Echege, a 33-year-old male resident of Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani community, Nsukka LGA, for severing the left wrist of his wife, Chinonso Echege.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, who has confessed to the crime, claimed he acted out of suspicion that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs.
“The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
“However, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc (+), has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to ensure a thorough and timely investigation, followed by the prosecution of the suspect.
“He further urged couples to resolve their differences through love, understanding, and legal means, rather than resorting to violent criminal acts.”
At the time of filing this report, the suspect was in the custody of the police while the victim was receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital.
